Phase diagram of Josephson junction arrays with capacitive disorder

چکیده
We study the phase diagram at finite temperature of Josephson junction arrays with capacitive disorder (i.e., random offset charges and/or random charging energies): in the limit of large particle numbers per junction, this is a remarkable physical realization of the disordered boson Hubbard model. By using a mean-field approximation, we compute the average free energy and the equation for the phase boundary line between the insulating and the superconducting phase. We find that the Mott-insulating lobe structure disappears for large variance (σ ∼ e) of the offset charges probability distribution. Further, with nearest-neighbor interactions, the insulating lobe around q = e is destroyed even for small values of σ. In the case of random charging energies, until the variance of the distribution reaches some critical value the superconducting phase increases in comparison to the situation in which all self-capacitances are equal. Quantum Monte Carlo Study of a Disordered 2-D Josephson Junction Array
Abstract We have studied the superconducting-insulating phase transition in a disordered two-dimensional Josephson junction array, using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We consider disorder in both the capacitive energies and in the values of the offset charges. The calculated phase diagram shows that the lobe structure of the phase diagram disappears for sufficiently strong disorder in the off...
متن کاملQuantum Phase Transitions in Josephson Junction Arrays
In this chapter we review the quantum phase transitions and transport properties of low-capacitance Josephson junction arrays. We will present the models and introduce the relevant topological excitations. The phase diagram depends in a very rich way on various control parameters. We will discuss the universality or or absence of universality of the transport properties at the quantum phase tra...
متن کاملQuantum Phase Transitions and Vortex Dynamics in Superconducting Networks
Josephson-junction arrays are ideal model systems to study a variety of phenomena such as phase transitions, frustration effects, vortex dynamics and chaos. In this review, we focus on the quantum dynamical properties of lowcapacitance Josephson-junction arrays. The two characteristic energy scales in these systems are the Josephson energy, associated with the tunneling of Cooper pairs between ...
متن کاملSuperconductor-insulator transition in a two-dimensional array of resistively shunted small josephson junctions
We have fabricated two-dimensional (2D) small-Josephson-junction arrays of which each Al-AlOx-Al junction is shunted by a Cr resistor. The arrays with large junction resistance and large charging energy show a transition from insulating to superconducting behavior when the shunt resistance is lowered below a critical value, which is close to 2R(Q) ( R(Q) identical withh/4e(2) = 6.45 kOmega). Th...
متن کاملGeneralized stability law for Josephson series arrays
By deriving an N-dimensional Poincare map, we explore the enhanced stability of Josephson series arrays using capacitive junctions. The analytic expression for the critical Floquet multiplier has a direct physical interpretation, affording new insight into the conditions that affect inphase stability. In particular, we generalize the well-known stability principle previously established for arr...
